Environmentalists press for logging ban in Algonquin

Environmentalists are irked over the uncertainty of natural resources minister Donna Cansfield’s position on logging in Algonquin Provincial Park. Most people are unaware that under current legislation, trees can be cut down and removed from more than three quarters of Ontario’s oldest park, four hours’ drive from Toronto.

A bicycle-friendly Toronto is an eco-friendly Toronto. Driving, car manufacturing, road building and fuel production account for close to 50% of all Canadian greenhouse gas emissions. Every litre of gasoline burned while driving produces 2.5 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Emissions from riding a bicycle? Zero.

Rainwater flushing system proposed

The City of Toronto’s works committee recommended plans yesterday to implement a “demonstration rainwater harvesting system” to flush toilets at Exhibition Place. The system would direct rainwater collected at the Automotive Building to flush toilets in its eight washrooms as part of a pilot project to showcase energy-efficient building practices.
