Ban the plastic bag in Toronto
November 26, 2007
In early May, the Ontario government announced a voluntary plan to reduce the use of plastic bags by half over the next five years. Why not take it further? There’s no reason not to follow San Francisco and Leaf Rapids, Manitoba’s leads in banning the bag altogether.
By mandating the use of bio-degradable bags made from cornstarch and encouraging the use of reusable cloth bags, Toronto could be one of the pioneers in what is bound to become standard practice across North America.
Ontario residents use about seven million - SEVEN MILLION - plastic bags a day, the vast majority of which end up in landfills, where they take hundreds - if not thousands - of years to break down. Tell your friends and neighbours - and next time someone poses the question “Paper or plastic?” say NEITHER, and know you’re doing the right thing.
