Get your organics delivered

November 27, 2007

We’re guessing that if you’re green and you live in Toronto, you probably already know about Green Earth Organics, but since we’re compiling a list of green businesses in the city, we thought we’d give them a shout-out.

Green Earth Organics is a home and office delivery service for organic fruits and veggies and other organic food. Once or twice a week, a box of seasonal and locally-grown (where possible) goods will show up on your doorstep, saving you the trouble of scouring your local grocery store for organic produce. And when you buy a box of goodies, Green Earth Organics will donate 10% of the profits from your order to various non-profit groups in the city.

If your budget forces you to be selective about which organic foods to buy, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) performed nearly 51 000 tests in order compile their “Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce,” a list of the cleanest and dirtiest fruits and veggies in terms of pesticides:

The Dirty Dozen (buy organic)

  • peaches
  • apples
  • bell peppers
  • celery
  • nectarines
  • strawberries
  • cherries
  • lettuce
  • grapes
  • pears
  • spinach
  • potatoes

And the cleanest 12:

  • onions
  • avocado
  • sweet corn (frozen)
  • pineapples
  • mango
  • sweet peas (frozen)
  • asparagus
  • kiwi
  • bananas
  • cabbage
  • broccoli
  • eggplant
