Tax break on bikes and helmets

November 30, 2007

A bicycle-friendly Toronto is an eco-friendly Toronto. Driving, car manufacturing, road building and fuel production account for close to 50% of all Canadian greenhouse gas emissions. Every litre of gasoline burned while driving produces 2.5 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Emissions from riding a bicycle? Zero.

Premier Dalton McGuinty is hoping to encourage Ontarians to strap on a helmet and take to the streets on two wheels next year by offering at tax break on bicycles and helmets. Effective December 1, the province is lifting the 8% sales tax on bikes under $1000 and related safety equipment as a “Christmas treat for our families,” says McGuinty. The premier hopes the tax exemption will encourage people to become more active and maybe help ease congestion on the roads.

Health promotion minister Margarett Best will hold a news conference on Sunday at a Toronto bike shop to talk about the new tax incentive.

Can’t think of the perfect Christmas present for someone on your list? Maybe this announcement will inspire an eco-friendly gift.
