Offset your emissions with Zerofootprint

December 1, 2007

According to Zerofootprint, the average North American emits close to 13 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year as a result of everyday activities like driving, electricity consumption, and heating our homes.

Zerofootprint is a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization with the mission of empowering individuals and communities to fight climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through carbon and ecological footprint management.

The Zerofootprint Calculator allows every individual, organization and city to find out how they are contributing to climate change and provides customized solutions for reducing our carbon, land, water, and/or tree footprints. You can compare your individual ecological footprint with the average person in Canada or Toronto to see how your greenness measures up.

Zerofootprint’s Cities program gives municipalities and residents tools to act on this important issue. The City of Toronto is partnering with Zerofootprint to launch Zerofootprint Toronto, the first ever community-wide initiative aimed at engaging all citizens to fight climate change on a massive scale. For more info, check out project website.

Once you’ve used the calculator to determine your level of emissions, Zerofootprint allows you to purchase offsets to help balance the effects of your emissions. Offsetting is as simple an idea as planting a new tree to replace one that’s been harvested. We still need to live consciously by reducing, reusing, and recycling where possible; offsetting should be used to account for environmental impacts that can’t be eliminated. Buy a home offset for $64, a vehicle offset of $96, an individual travel offset for $16, or give the gift of footprint reduction to a friend with a carbon offsets gift card of $20. Great stocking stuffer!

Zerofootprint operates as ethically as it eschews others should, by:

  • bulk purchasing their office paper and making sure it is either Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified or 100% recycled and processed without the use of chlorine or chlorine compoundsAny paper that comes into our office either leaves in a useful state or goes into the recycling.
  • having organic fruit and organic fair trade coffee delivered weekly
  • using better communication technology - teleconferencing instead of driving or flying and presenting virtually instead of printing
  • searching for printers that effectively manage their environmental impacts. Their business cards are printed on FSC-certified stock with 100% post-consumer recycled content using vegetable-based dyes by a printer that uses a waterless printing process to eliminate emissions to water and air.
