10 Earth Day ideas

April 22, 2008

Happy Earth Day! We’ve compiled a list of cool green things you can do today in celebration of our planet.

1. Join 364,855 Canadians and take David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge. Shrink your footprint, fatten your wallet, cool the planet and make a difference.

2. Download a free copy of the Academy-Award nominated movie The Living Sea. Explore the mysterious depths, meet humpback whales, swim with thousands of golden jellyfish and witness the bizarre spawning behaviour of giant clams.

3. Rock out on Earth Day with Mike Devlin’s top ten eco-friendly rock songs, a list that includes Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, Black Sabbath, the Pretenders and Bruce Cockburn.

4. Looking for a web browswer that can house all your fave social networking sites (Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Blogger, etc.) in one place? Switch to Flock’s Eco Edition, which comes loaded with some of the top green content on the web. 10% of proceeds go to an eco cause selected by users.

5. Know where you stand - literally. The Zerofootprint calculator allows every individual, organization and city to find out how they are contributing to climate change and provides customized solutions for reducing our carbon, land, water, and/or tree footprints. You can compare your individual ecological footprint with the average person in Canada or Toronto to see how your greenness measures up.

6. Do all your web searches at Ecocho, an eco-friendly search engine that promises to help offset carbon emissions at no cost to the user by planting two trees for every 1000 searches. The more searching you do, the more trees are planted.

7. Take a green yoga class at 889 Yonge or one of 5 Moksha Yoga locations in the city, two yoga studios that operate consciously and mindfully of the planet.

8. Want to share your love of the planet with the next generation? Check out Ecokids, Canada’s environmental destination for kids. Your pint-sized environmentalist can pick up an eco-fact of the day or find games and activities relating to wildlife, climate change, energy, waste and land use.

9. Save paper and enter to win a Toyota Prius by going paperless with Rogers. Between March 1 and May 31, Rogers and Canada Post will donate $1 to Earth Day Canada for every person who switches from paper billing to electronic billing. Visit www.rogers.com and switch today!

10. Go for a walk. The forecast calls for sunny and warm today, so get out there and enjoy it.
