Social program for energy conservation announced
May 27, 2008
The Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) and Toronto Hydro announced the launch of a social housing in-suite light bulb replacement program today - part of a larger sustainability program for housing providers and residents.
This year, Toronto Hydro is providing financial incentive to SHSC and its member agencies to replace old, incandescent light bulbs with 60,000 CSA-approved EnergyStar compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) in 12,000 social housing units across Toronto. This replacement program is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 2.2 megawatts. In addition, SHSC will run an education and training program for both tenants and maintenance staff on the benefits of conservation.
“Toronto Hydro is delighted to again work with SHSC and Toronto tenants in helping lower costs through more energy efficient lighting and helping to lower overall demand for electricity in the city”, said David O’Brien, CEO of Toronto Hydro. “We look forward to another successful collaboration.”
The initiative was announced at the Spotlight on Energy Efficiencies show hosted by Green Light on a Better Environment (GLOBE) and Toronto’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration.
