Coke adds 10 hybrids to its TO fleet

June 13, 2008

This week, Coca-Cola Bottling Company (CCB) introduced ten heavy-duty hybrid-electric delivery trucks into its fleet in Toronto. The move follows last week’s introduction of ten hybrids in Vancouver, and the company plans to have 142 hybrids on the road by August, giving it the largest heavy-duty hybrid delivery fleet in North America.

Coca-Cola’s hybrid delivery trucks improve fuel consumption by 37 percent, reduce emissions by 32 percent and create less noise and emissions when stopped in traffic. “The introduction of these hybrid-electric trucks is the kind of corporate commitment to addressing climate change that I applaud,” said Mayor David Miller.

The drink giant conducted various test to determine the most fuel and energy efficient way for hybrids to deliver their product sustainably. Following five years of research, Coca-Cola built a truck to source electrical power instead of gas when traveling at speeds below 30MPH, substantially reducing emissions in city traffic.

As part of the company’s overall corporate sustainability commitments, CCB’s strategic focus areas include water stewardship, sustainable packaging/recycling and energy conservation/climate change. They have contributed to several environmental efforts, including a partnership with Riversides Stewardship Alliance, an organization dedicated to protecting rivers and watersheds, and developed a “zero waste” plan at their Winnipeg facilities.

“Coca-Cola Bottling Company will continue to explore ways to expand our corporate responsiblity and sustainability efforts across all aspects of our business,” said Kevin Warren, CCB president.
