ELLE’s green issue misses the mark
June 14, 2008
Dear ELLE Canada,
I was delighted when I came across your “green” issue this week at my local newsstand. However, as inevitably happens with the green versions of most - if not all - mainstream glossies, I was disappointed that you chose not to dedicate 100 percent of this month’s editorial content to environmentally conscious fashion and glamour.
In the first editorial page you point to a few lovely “luxe eco offerings” - and on the very next revert to the usual mass-produced, earth-unconscious wares. Why not showcase at least one or two organic cotton or bamboo tops in your “got-to-have” tanks section? You could have chosen to highlight sulfate- and paraben-free makeup from Dr. Hauschka, Jane Iredale or Lavera, reviewed planet-themed cultural projects, and outfitted your main fashion spreads with beautiful, eco-consious clothes from Linda Loudermilk, Stella McCartney or EDUN and sustainably made swimwear from Deux FM, Mociun or Meadow.
So kudos for your efforts this month, but next year I’ll hope for more truly sustainable content in your organic issue - and every other. ELLE Canada can help bring green to the mainstream and prove to Canadian fashionistas that it’s possible to dress responsibly without sacrificing taste or style.
Sincerely,
Living Green Toronto
