Ontario considered for wind turbine factory

A German maker of offshore wind turbines is targeting southern Ontario as the location for its first North American manufacturing plant, a venture that would create thousands of local jobs and inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the province’s economy. Multibrid, majority owned by French nuclear giant Areva SA, made the announcement this morning alongside officials from Trillium Power Wind Corp., a local renewable-energy developer that plans to build a massive wind farm in Lake Ontario about 15 kilometres offshore from Prince Edward County.

Coke adds 10 hybrids to its TO fleet

This week, Coca-Cola Bottling Company (CCB) introduced ten heavy-duty hybrid-electric delivery trucks into its fleet in Toronto. The move follows last week’s introduction of ten hybrids in Vancouver, and the company plans to have 142 hybrids on the road by August, giving it the largest heavy-duty hybrid delivery fleet in North America.

New solar technology to power Wal-Mart superstore

Wal-Mart Canada has plans to build the country’s largest rooftop solar-energy system on a superstore planned for Markham later this year. Ottawa-based Menova Energy will install an innovative “concentrated” solar-energy system with the help of a $3-million investment by the provincial government. Wal-Mart is partnering in the installation of the system to help prove the feasibility of the technology for a retail environment.
